A Simple Sewing Project 4 Kids

Sewing Buttons

When children are interested in sewing and they are very young, 5 years old, cater the project to their skill level.

This was a fun project with my granddaughter, sewing buttons on a dress for fun.

I picked out fairytale buttons for this project. You could do sports, or flowers or crayons…lots of choices.

We sewed them on an already made dress because it made the project simple for both me and my granddaughter.

List of Items You Need:

  1. Outfit or garment
  2. Hand sewing needle
  3. Thread to match the garment
  4. Scissors
  5. Decorative buttons

How to sew a button on:

  1. Pick a sewing needle with a big eye so it is easier to thread.
  2. Cut about 24″ length of thread.
  3. Thread the needle and double the tread over so u have a length of 12″.
  4. Double knot the end of the thread.
  5. Place your buttons on the garment so you know where you want to sew them.
  6. Take the first button with right-side on the right side of garment.
  7. On the back side of garment you should be able to feel the shank of the button.
  8. Take one stitch through the shank on both sides and pull the thread through tight.
  9. Circle around where you just took a stitch and make another identical stitch and pull the thread tight.
  10. Do this same stitch 10 times.
  11. Then take another stitch only this time make a figure 8 in the thread and put your needle through the figure 8.
  12. Carefully pull the string tight.
  13. Make a second figure 8 stitch and cut the thread.

You have just sewed on your first button. Align the next button and repeat steps one through thirteen on each button.

When your string gets to be about 4″ long you will need to reload the needle w thread. Just make a figure 8 and cut the thread. Then go back to your stitches until you have 10 and make your figure 8 knots to complete the step.

Be patient with the new sewer. You may have to do the figure 8’s because they knot up easily.

Now you have a garment with buttons hand sewn on by your child. They can be proud of their accomplishment with their sewing project.
