Let’s sew the quilted casserole cozy pattern first. You will need a large piece of paper, butcher block paper or a newspaper.
- Place the paper under the casserole dish and draw around it. This will give you the area of the bottom of the cozy. Now pull the paper up the sides of the pan and decide how far above the pan you want the cozy to be. Now take your seam gauge and measure how many inches from the bottom of the pan to the top of the newspaper that you want the cozy to be. You will want to measure the side length…Example 3” plus leave enough for the seam which will be ⅝”. Now lay the paper out flat and measure the 3 ⅝” from the line that you traced the bottom of the dish all the way around. This gives you your cut line for your pattern.
- 2. Now you will decide if you want the cozy to be reversible by using two different fabrics. Cut two pieces of fabric with your pattern. This should take approximately 1 yard of 45” material for each side. Place one piece of fabric, right side down on your table. Take one piece of quilt batting which is 45” x 60” and cut the quilting to fit just inside your cozy piece. Pin the batting on your cozy piece and pin on the other side of the cozy material with right side up. Now you will have both right sides to the outside and the batting in the middle of your pattern pieces.
- 3. If you have a quilting machine you can choose your pattern to quilt the two pieces. If you have a regular stitch machine, use a simple crisscross pattern. Make a cross + in the fabric from center of rectangle to center of other side. And do the same across the short side of the rectangle. You will be sewing on the right side of the fabric. (Do not worry about the edges. We will finish them with bias tape at the end. )Now sew from one corner to the opposite corner of the rectangle to form an X. Now from here it is up to you how quilted you would like to make the cozy. You can add more pattern to the quilting as you desire. When you are finished quilting its time to finish the edges.
- 4. Take the bias tape that complements your colors and attach with right sides together the edge of the bias tape to the edge of the cozy. Attach this completely around the edge and fit the pieces together neatly when they meet. Now fold the right side of the bias tape over your edge and secure it to the other side of the cozy edge with a nice top stitch.
- 5. So this is where you decide how you want to hold the cozy on the casserole dish. I like to fold up the sides and place it under the casserole dish. Where the corners flare I make a hand stitch through the corner material several times to allow the corners to hold themselves up. This way you just set the cozy on the table and set the casserole in the cozy for serving.
- 6. You could also take the excess fabric and cut strips to make handles by sewing them together with right sides together and leave on end open to turn the strap right-side-out. Then attach the straps to the quilted cozy and you will be able to carry the casserole. The straps can be attached by sewing them to the bias tape or making button holes and buttons to attach them to the casserole cozy.
Now no casserole cozy would be complete with out a casserole recipe. So here is my famous (at least in my family LOL) Lasagna Casserole:
Lasagna Casserole
Bake 350* F 20 min til cheese melts and casserole bubbles
Yields two large casserole dishes of Lasagna
2 # lean hamburger
1 med. Onion chopped
3 small cans mushroom soup
1 small can Campbells Cheese Soup
1 small can tomato paste
Salt & Pepper to taste
1 T garlic powder
2 12 pkg of mozzarella cheese slices
1 carton cottage cheese
6 lasagna noodles per dish for total of 12
So brown your hamburger and onions with salt and pepper and add garlic powder. Then mix in all ingredients except noodles.
Then in separate pan boil water and cook lasagna noodles as directed. So when noodles are ready you can just fish them out of the water…you don’t have to drain.
Then place some of the hamburger mixture on bottom of casserole dish evenly. Next pour cottage cheese spoonful in center of hamburger mixture and spread towards edges. Then take mozzarella cheese slices and cover the mixture with one thin layer. Next place 3 lasagna noodles side by side over the mixture. Place mozzarella cheese slices on top of noodles. So now place more hamburger mixture on top of noodles with cheese and repeat process til you have made two layers of noodles and you end with hamburger mixture on top with mozzarella cheese on it.
Prepare your second dish the same way. Place in pre-heated 350*F oven for 20 min. Remove from oven and cut in slices and serve.
I hope you enjoyed this sewing project with recipe. I thought it might be fun to combine sewing and cooking for a change. Please let me know what you think of this new format and leave a comment so I will know how to proceed.
