A pattern is always the first step in sewing a throw pillow cover.
- Measure the pillow you are covering. My pillow is 18 ½” square. I will make the cover 19” x 19” to accommodate a ½” seam allowance.
- You will need 4 yards of fabric for this project. Either 4 yards of the same fabric or 2 yards of each color fabric if you are making the pillow two tone.
- Cut out two 19” x 19” squares.
- Place right sides together and stitch ½” seam around 3 sides of the square.
- Turn the fabric right side out and slip the cover over your existing pillow.
- If the pillow needs more stuffing you may want to add batting to make the pillow fluffier.
- Fold in the open edge of the square ½” and iron flat.
- You can decide what kind of stitch you would like to hand sew to close up the opening.
- You could also install a zipper or Velcro before you turn the right sides out if you would like that but I am going to just whip stitch the opening closed.
- This whip stitch is easy to remove and replace if you need to wash the cover.
The pillow cover is finished. Now you can place it on your chair or sofa.
