How To Sew A Simple Pot Holder

What do you need to begin making a hot pad? The following items are needed to begin:

  1. Fabric for two sides of a 6 inch square material
  2. An old washcloth for padding
  3. Thread to match or contrast your material.
  4. Hand sewing needle
  5. Bias Tape if you prefer

To begin cut out two 6 inch square pieces of material and cut an old clean washcloth to 5 inch square.

Lay one of the 6 inch pieces right side down and place the 5 inch old washcloth in the middle of the 6inch piece. Pin the old washcloth to the material.

Next sew through the 6 inch square and the old washcloth on the right side of the material in whatever pattern you would like to create.

I choose a simple crisscross pattern from one corner to the opposite corner. Be sure and carefully back stitch when you finish the one line at a time.

Now make a plus pattern over the crisscross.

Place your right sides of the 6 inch material together and stitch ⅝” around the four sides of the 6 inch square leaving at least two inches un-sewn (gap) on one side of the square to allow for you to turn the pot holder right side out.

Hand stitch the small gap you left at the bottom of the pot holder.

You are now finished with the pot holder. Additionally you can add bias tape to the edge. This edging is entirely up to your taste and can also leave a piece of material for a hook to hang the pot holder.
