This is a project especially great for small children but the older ones may enjoy it too. Did you use flannel graphs for learning when you were a kid? A flannel graph was a flannel background with dozens of pieces that you could create a story on. It was educational and so much fun too. Taking that idea, here are instructions on how to make a Flannel Pumpkin to decorate and tell your own stories with.
Items you will need:
- Orange Flannel Cloth
- Multi Colors of Flannel Fabric
- Sewing Scissors
- Thumb Tacks
- Zip Lock Baggies
- Your Imagination
Instructions:
- Cut out a 15” x 18” Pumpkin in the orange flannel.
- Tack it to the wall while you cut out other pieces
- Now the imagination comes in…
- Cut 3 triangles out of black felt and place them on the pumpkin as eyes and nose.
- Cut a stem w green flannel.
- As you cut these out, place them on the orange pumpkin on the wall.
- See how easy it is to stick to the flannel and stay in place?
- Cut out other shapes and in whatever colors you would like to add.
- Examples: black cats, spiders, spider webs, ghosts, any character you would like to use for telling a story…The Peanuts Gang would be a great start.
- Use a zip lock baggie to hold all the pieces.
You have now created a flannel pumpkin with accessories. Enjoy putting them on the pumpkin and taking them off. Or telling a story with the pieces. Your imagination can flourish with these characters and pieces you have cut out to enjoy.
This can be done for any holiday using the Christmas Tree for Christmas and Basket for Easter, Shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day, George Washington’s shadow, Hearts, Flowers, Flag or Fireworks, Cornucopia etc…
